Compensation and Living Arrangements

Hotels are required to pay interns a minimum of $7 per hour and overtime paid at 150%. This wage is the same employee wage earned by American colleagues of the same level. A work week is based on 40 hours per week, 5 days per week. Your average income will be a minimum of $1,100 per month. Depending on business in the hotel, you may work more or less than 40 hours per week. Your wages are subject to income taxes (approximately 15%), which will be withheld from your paycheck. You may claim a tax refund at the end of each fiscal year.

Living arrangements in the USA are very different than Japan. Many young people live in safe and comfortable private apartment complexes. These complexes often are located in nicer areas of the city and have lock security systems. They also offer wide range of facilities including washer and dryer units, swimming pools and tennis courts.

In certain cities, Aspire Internships offers the possibility to reserve an apartment, even before you leave Japan. We have a listing of several apartment complexes close to public transportation. In other cities where we do not have listings, we can schedule an appointment with an apartment locator which will assist you, free of charge, in finding an accommodation.

In many cases, interns decided to share a two-bedroom apartment which means that you will have your own bedroom and you will share the living room, kitchen, and bath room with another intern. In this situation the average rent is approximately $400 per month. Our office can arrange that you stay at the hotel for the first few days.
